With no tasked serials the squadron concentrated on weapons training at Penor. Nine pairs were flown during the day with eight low drag dummy bombs on each aircraft.

While remaining squadron members flew a fourship Nav with two ship bounce FLTLT Laming led the final Starfish serial. This involved a total of seven aircraft; however no ship were sighted during the entire sortie.

Flying today was for the Air Defence Exercise workup. This involved the squadron attacking ships, gun emplacements and airfields on or around the Malaysian Peninsula and Singapore Island. A Singaporean C-130 was used for air refuelling. FLTLT Laming flew two engine test flights on NZ 6205.

21st and 22nd
The squadron flew pair and four ship missions as attackers during the air defence exercise. The defenders were Malaysian F-5’s operating out of Kuantan and the RAAF F-18’s out of Butterworth. Defending Singapore were Singaporean F-5’s. Malaysian A4-PTM’s and PC-7’s also flew attacking missions during these two days. Targets were ships operating East of Malaysia, Penor Range to the south of the Kuantan, Butterworth airfield and two ranges in Singapore.

The Squadron carried out Defender sorties for the day. This involved CAP patrols for the ships East of Malaysia. Intercepts were directed by the radar controllers aboard these ships. Sorties were flown in pairs with three levels of scramble time. These being five minutes with pilots strapped in and ready to go, seven minutes, jets preflighted sitting under the wing, fifteen minutes where the pilots were kitted up waiting in the operations room. All in all a successful day for ground crew and aircrew alike with good scramble times and many intercepts with Malaysian PC-7’s, A-4PTM’s F-5’s and Singaporean F-16’s and F-5’s.

The Squadron returned as attackers for the final day of ADEX. Two four ship sorties led by WGCDR Howse and FLTLT Perry, and one pair led by FLTLT Gilchrist, were flown attacking assorted targets. FLTLT Niles in NZ 6213 suffered a bird strike which required him to divert to Butterworth. A van with the required parts and ground crew left for Butterworth to repair the aircraft. The trip took 12.5 hours.

This was the Air Combat phase with the Malaysian A4-PTm’s of 6 Squadron and F-5’s of 11 Squadron. The first day involved 1v1 sorties, days 2 and 3 were compiled of 2v2’s, 2v4’s and 4v4’s. All aspects of the air combat went well, particularly due to all three squadrons working out of the came base. This assisted briefs, debriefs and domestics of all sorties.
