One of the key components of the upgrade was the radar. Originally the RNZAF planned to use an off the shelf unit from a US supplier, but it soon became clear that these units would not meet the specification requirements for the Kahu upgrade. Tenders were re-opened and from the new group of submissions a modified version of the Westinghouse APG-66 (used in the F-16A/B) 12-mode radar was selected.
